Ethereum Price Jumps Amid Controversy Over Proposed Validator Reward Cuts
Ethereum's price rose by 0.88% on August 5 to trade at $1,876 as developers proposed an EIP-8361 that could abolish validator rewards if staked ETH exceeds 50% of its supply.
The proposal, submitted by Jerome de Tychey and others, would gradually reduce rewards for validators once the threshold is met. However, this has sparked controversy among some community members who question the team's priorities.
Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave, expressed his opposition to the proposal, stating that it 'makes ETH less viable as an asset' and restricts its potential. He also fears that institutional buyers may lose interest in holding ETH due to reduced staking rewards.
Mike Silagadze, CEO of EtherFi, echoed similar concerns, arguing that the reasoning behind the proposal does not make sense and could harm the DeFi ecosystem on Ethereum, which relies heavily on staking.
