Ethereum Price Surges to $2,453.79 as Short Squeeze and Institutional Buying Fuel Rally
Ethereum's price has seen a significant surge in recent weeks, with the asset trading at $2,453.79 as of August 30. This sudden move has left traders wondering if it's the start of something new or just a short squeeze.
The Ethereum price opened June at around $1,988 and plummeted to a low near $1,512 in July, with a drawdown of about 22% in a single month. The price then recovered slowly through August, reaching a local high near $2,550. However, the Treasury announcement on August 19 that it would double its buybacks of longer dated government bonds sent long-term yields falling and risk assets soaring.
The combination of this macro catalyst and a brutal short squeeze led to ETH jumping around 20% in one session on August 19. Short liquidations totaled approximately $265 million in 24 hours, with around $1.69 billion over three days. The real institutional money pouring into Ethereum ETFs also supported the price increase.
Looking at the chart, the 200 EMA has flipped from a ceiling to a floor, and the RSI is cooling off, indicating healthy momentum resetting without a price collapse. The levels that matter are $2,430 as immediate support, $2,200 as next major support, and $1,800 as the last line of defense.
