Ethereum Prioritizes Fee-Flexible Upgrade for 2027
Ethereum developers have elevated Frame Transactions to the top of the planned 2027 Hegotá upgrade agenda. The proposal, known as EIP-8141, allows users to pay network fees without first holding ETH. This change could enable wallets and applications to sponsor fees while charging users in stablecoins instead.
EIP-8141 introduces a native account abstraction model, separating gas payments from ETH ownership. This means users can send stablecoins even with zero ETH balance. The proposal does not eliminate ETH's role in securing the network but changes how costs are presented to end-users.
The Ethereum Foundation's protocol teams assessed 62 proposed improvements using nearly 400 evaluations from about 60 specialists across nine teams. FOCIL, a censorship-resistance measure, and Frame Transactions emerged as the consensus- and execution-layer priorities. The target date for the upgrade leaves a substantial development and testing window.
