Ethereum Proposal Sparks Debate Over Staking Rewards
A new Ethereum proposal has sparked heated debate among developers, with some arguing it could weaken demand for ETH. EIP-8361, or Tapered Issuance Burn, would reduce staking issuance to zero at 50% of total supply, phased in over about 18 months.
Aave founder Stani Kulechov slammed the proposal, saying it introduces unpredictability that scares off serious capital. He also raised concerns for solo stakers and lending markets, arguing that if staking rewards fall to zero, there would be little reason to borrow ETH within DeFi.
Kulechov compared this scenario to investors rotating into other yield-bearing assets, such as stablecoins, when interest rates change. Reaction from the community has been mixed, with some questioning whether the proposal should move forward before a separate mechanism exists to reward solo and home stakers more generously.
