Ethereum Proposes Quantum-Secure Staking System to Mitigate $104 Billion Risk
The Ethereum Foundation has proposed a draft measure to secure its staking system against potential quantum threats. The current staking system holds around 42.4 million ETH, worth approximately $104 billion, which relies on cryptographic signatures vulnerable to quantum attacks.
EIP-8394, the proposal, aims to redesign the validator deposit contract to support multiple signature schemes and variable-length public keys. This would lay the groundwork for a migration away from BLS signatures, currently used by all validators, toward quantum-resistant alternatives.
The estimated 'Q-Day', when quantum systems could realistically break ECDSA and related schemes, ranges between 2028 and 2035. To mitigate this risk, Ethereum aims to complete key post-quantum security milestones by 2029.
