Ethereum Reclaims $1,900 as Derivatives Activity Surges
The crypto market has shown modest gains on August 17, led by Ethereum reclaiming $1,900 and outperforming altcoins HYPE and PUMP. Bitcoin held steady above $63,500, while the total crypto market capitalization rose nearly 1% to $2.18 trillion.
Despite overall investor sentiment remaining weak, derivatives activity surged with a 72% increase in total crypto derivatives volume to approximately $96 billion. Trading activity picked up after the weekend slowdown, but liquidations also increased sharply, climbing 253% to $136 million.
Ethereum's four-hour chart shows it forming its largest four-hour candle since August 12, with rising green volume bars indicating stronger buying activity. However, ETH still faces a crucial resistance level at $1,917, and a decisive close above this could open the door towards the next resistance around $1,980.
