Ethereum Researchers Prepare Staking for Quantum-Resistant Keys

Ethereum researchers are working on an overhaul of the deposit contract to make staking compatible with future quantum-resistant keys. The current system uses Boneh, Lynn, Shacham (BLS) keys, which are efficient but vulnerable to attacks from a sufficiently capable quantum machine.

About 42.4 million ETH, worth roughly $104 billion at recent prices, is already staked using BLS keys. However, the contract hard-codes these dimensions and would not be able to accept new, post-quantum schemes even if they were agreed upon tomorrow.

The draft proposal, labeled EIP-8394, would replace the rigid layout with variable-length credentials of up to 8,192 bytes and a scheme tag on every deposit. This would allow for easy switching to new cryptographic standards in the future without requiring significant changes to the existing contract.

The Ethereum Foundation has been prioritizing post-quantum work since early 2026 and aims to complete core protocol pieces by around 2029. The timing is deliberate, as cryptographic migrations on a live chain take years and require coordination among client teams, staking pools, and other stakeholders.
