Ethereum Researchers Propose Quantum-Resistant Validator Upgrade to Protect Against Future Attacks

Ethereum researchers have proposed an upgrade to the blockchain's validator deposit contract as part of preparations to protect against future quantum-computing attacks. The draft proposal focuses on rebuilding the deposit contract, which allows users to lock Ether (ETH) and become Ethereum validators.

The current deposit system uses BLS signature format, but this is incompatible with alternative signature formats that are considered quantum-resistant. The proposed design would introduce a mechanism enabling the network to eventually stop accepting BLS signatures and transition toward quantum-resistant cryptography.

Under the proposed plan, deposits could support different key sizes and carry identifiers specifying which cryptographic system they use. This would initially keep BLS deposits active while allowing other cryptographic systems to be introduced alongside them. Ethereum developers could later permanently disable new BLS deposits without removing validators already using existing BLS keys.
