Ethereum Reserve Collapse: Holders Withdraw Assets Amid Price Surge
Despite a 27% price jump, Ethereum reserves on trading platforms have dropped to a record low. According to Santiment analysts, $ETH holders are withdrawing assets from exchanges en masse even as prices rise.
This trend defies conventional market logic, where cryptocurrency is traditionally transferred to cold wallets when prices fall to ride out the downturn. However, in this case, the pace of outflows accelerated directly during the active phase of the rally.
Since August 16, Ethereum's market value has surged by around 27%, climbing to $2,528. Meanwhile, Bitcoin balances have remained near their top range, with 1.4 million coins moved from exchange accounts into self-custody and staking.
The reason for this divergence lies in the fundamental difference between the nature of the two largest digital assets. While $BTC holders need to keep their assets on exchanges to react quickly and execute trades, Ethereum investors transfer their coins directly into staking protocols to generate native yield within the network.
