Ethereum Roadmap Reveal: Buterin's New Priorities Reflect Quantum Computing Reality
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently shared his roadmap for the Ethereum protocol, comparing it to the one he outlined in 2023. This comparison reveals significant changes and additions that reflect evolving priorities and technological advancements.
The new roadmap includes seven items that were previously impossible to build due to lack of technical feasibility. These items are grouped into four clusters: privacy, post-quantum security, leanification of the specification, and native rollups.
One notable addition is strong user privacy features, including privacy pools, keyed nonces, recent roots, and a mechanism called 'wormholes' that allows value transfers without broadcasting a user's full transaction history. This reflects a commitment to first-class attention to strong privacy.
Another significant change is the inclusion of post-quantum security measures, such as leanSPHINCS signatures and aggregation, and zkzk frames. These concepts did not exist in 2023 and are designed to address the challenges posed by quantum computers.
