Ethereum Sets Quantum Deadline for 2029
The Ethereum Foundation has set a deadline of December 2029 to make Ethereum resistant to quantum computers, viewing it as a fixed target rather than a research goal. The foundation wants the base layer of Ethereum to be quantum-resistant across execution, consensus, and data.
According to the Protocol cluster's priorities blog, planning for 'Q-day' in 2030 is a deliberately aggressive assumption. However, the foundation acknowledges that it is front-running most credible forecasts, with around 65% of ETH already sitting in quantum-vulnerable addresses, according to Project Eleven.
The Hegotá hard fork has been framed as the test of whether the later post-quantum forks will ship on time. To achieve full resistance by December 2029, an average of 7.2 months per fork is needed, which the cluster considers aggressive.
