Ethereum Sets Quantum Deadline with Ambitious Fork Schedule
Ethereum developers have set a concrete deadline to shield the network's base layer from quantum computers, which could theoretically break current cryptography. The target date is December 2029, when execution, consensus, and data systems must run on post-quantum cryptography.
According to Fredrik Svantes, who leads protocol coordination at the Ethereum Foundation, the group is 'aggressively targeting' a quantum-resistant Layer 1 no later than December 2029. This commitment already influences which proposals engineering teams recommend for Hegota, the expected fork following Glamsterdam's late-2026 launch.
The two top-ranked EIPs are FOCIL (Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists) and Frame Transactions. The former builds censorship resistance into the protocol, while the latter creates a structural path to move individual accounts onto post-quantum authentication without a forced network-wide migration.
