Ethereum Shifts Focus to Quantum Security and AI-Assisted Verification
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin outlined significant changes to the project's roadmap in a recent post on X. The updates reflect shifting priorities, including stronger quantum security and privacy. Since publishing his 2023 roadmap, Ethereum has accelerated preparations for 'Q-Day' and the potential threat posed by quantum computers.
According to Buterin, the project is increasingly relying on STARKs, a cryptographic technology used to verify computations, and AI-assisted verification. This approach allows researchers to check that the protocol works as intended, but only with modern AI tools and formal verification.
The 2023 roadmap initially focused on native rollups and exploring a future beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). However, Buterin's updated strawmap reveals new priorities, such as simplifying Ethereum's technical specifications and creating specialized mechanisms for scaling. Advances in AI have made it practical to apply these techniques more extensively.
