Ethereum Shifts Priorities, Emphasizes Privacy, Quantum Security, and Formal Verification
Ethereum's technical roadmap has undergone significant changes, reflecting shifting priorities and emerging technologies. According to Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, the current Strawmap highlights several key areas of focus, including strong privacy protection, post-quantum security, and formal verification.
The introduction of native rollups is a notable development, allowing for the reuse of mainnet verification infrastructure and reducing the need for custom proof systems. This change is expected to simplify the process of scaling Ethereum, making it more efficient and secure.
Vitalik has also emphasized the importance of post-quantum security, proposing the use of leanSPHINCS signature aggregation and zkzk frames to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computers. The current timeline for completing L1 protocol upgrades is 2029, with a potential several-year window for full execution-layer migration.
The Strawmap currently outlines seven potential upgrades through 2029, arranged at a cadence of roughly one fork every six months. While some proposals remain in draft or review status, the Ethereum Foundation has established a dedicated post-quantum team to oversee the transition to quantum-resistant cryptography.
