Ethereum Shifts Priorities to Quantum Security and Privacy
Ethereum's roadmap is shifting to prioritize quantum security and privacy, following the lead of major tech companies like Microsoft and Google. The team behind the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap is increasing its focus on post-quantum cryptography, with a target deadline of 2029.
The changes are part of a larger effort to modernize the Ethereum network, according to Vitalik Buterin. Buterin compared the process to updating the Ship of Theseus, where gradual replacements eventually render the original ship unrecognizable. In this case, developers want to update key elements without disrupting the current network.
The shift in priorities includes moving quantum resistance to the top of the list, replacing some EVM improvements, and incorporating new cryptographic schemes. The team is also exploring the use of zero-knowledge proofs and private L1 transactions to enhance user privacy.
