Ethereum Slows Down as Market Enthusiasm Wanes
Ethereum's price surge above $2,500 has given way to caution as market enthusiasm begins to wane.
The cryptocurrency's value remains elevated after a 30% rally from below $2,000, but the pace of gains has slowed significantly. Instead of a trend reversal, this slowdown suggests that the easiest phase of the rally may have passed, with investors becoming more cautious about the sustainability of capital flows.
A major driver behind Ethereum's recent price increase was the U.S. Treasury's decision to expand its buyback program for longer-dated bonds, which temporarily pushed yields lower and weighed on the USD, improving sentiment toward risk assets. This momentum was amplified by a wave of short covering, with the crypto market recording approximately $2.99 billion in liquidations, mostly from short positions, on August 19 alone.
However, a short squeeze is unlikely to sustain a long-term rally, as it relies on forced demand and will eventually fade once most vulnerable short positions have been removed from the market. To continue moving higher, Ethereum needs active buying from ETFs, institutions, and investors willing to hold the asset at a higher price level.
