Ethereum Staking Bottleneck Costs Over $350,000 Daily
A staggering backlog of staking activity on Ethereum has led to an estimated daily loss of over $350,000 in potential rewards for depositors. This bottleneck occurs as more than 42 million ETH, nearly 35% of the cryptocurrency's supply, is already staked.
According to CryptoRank, the Ethereum validator activation queue held approximately 2.059 million ETH at the end of August. The current wait time for deposits joining the back of the line is estimated to be around 36 days.
The imbalance between demand and staking capacity has been a recurring issue. In January, over 4 million ETH was waiting to enter the validator set, with some facing delays of up to 63 days. Although this number has decreased since then, it remains significant enough to impose a five-week delay on new entrants.
As Ethereum's staking rates and prices remain unchanged, the backlog represents approximately 141 to 148 ETH of potential consensus rewards per day, worth around $348,000 to $366,000 at an ETH price near $2,466. This translates to a lost opportunity for depositors, particularly those joining at the back of the queue.
Liquid staking providers like Lido have highlighted the economics of long activation waits, stating that foregone rewards can make some stVault deposits unattractive.
