Ethereum Staking Hits Record High Amid Price Weakness
Ethereum staking has reached an all-time high, despite the cryptocurrency's prolonged price weakness. According to CryptoQuant data, total staked ETH rose from around 36 million in early 2026 to a record 41.9 million as Ethereum fell towards $1,800.
This steady increase suggests that lower prices have not weakened the incentive to lock ETH for yield. In fact, staking is absorbing additional Ethereum supply through this downtrend, reducing the immediate amount available for trading.
However, recent inflows of around 28,700 ETH remain below earlier spikes above 200,000 ETH, indicating that accumulation has become less aggressive. As a result, it will likely limit ETH liquidity and strengthen scarcity if market demand eventually recovers.
EIP-8363, also known as 'Tapered Issuance Burn,' aims to alter the way new participation on Ethereum is rewarded. Under this proposal, validator rewards would decrease in proportion to increases in staking ratios. At a 33% staking ratio, annual issuance would begin to trend downward at a rate lower than the present reward structure.
This shift could reduce the incentive to keep locking additional ETH while limiting dilution for unstaked holders. However, reduced yields may deter institutional investors from purchasing or utilizing liquid staking products, weakening yield-based investment strategies.
