Ethereum Staking Hits Record High, Hiding Hidden Exit Risk

Ethereum's staked supply has hit an all-time high of 33.33%, a sign of growing network commitment, but it also represents a hidden exit risk for validators.

Bitmine is the primary driver behind this concentration, holding close to 5% of total ETH supply and accounting for approximately 12% of total supply staked.

Bitmine's financing structure, including its 9.5% annual fixed dividend paid out weekly, introduces a recurring cash obligation that could force the firm to liquidate its ETH holdings, causing a surge in wait times for validators in the exit queue.

The Kiln incident is used as a reference point, where approximately 1.6 million ETH were unstaked, pushing exit queue times to nearly 50 days. Bitmine currently holds around 4.9 million ETH staked, which could trigger a similar situation if it's forced to liquidate even a portion of its position.

The Glamsterdam upgrade is scheduled for Q4 2026 and includes EIP-8061, which addresses the exit side of the queue problem by removing the cap on validator exits and increasing the exit churn limit. However, this solution does not resolve the entry-side congestion, which could persist as a structural feature of the network.
