Ethereum Staking Proposal Sparks Debate Over Reward Reduction
Ethereum researchers have proposed EIP-8363, a change aimed at reducing staking rewards as the percentage of ETH secured by validators rises. The proposal would taper new ETH issuance as staking participation grows, eventually targeting zero issuance once 50% of ETH is staked.
The current staking yield stands at around 2.7%, with approximately 41.5 million ETH staked, representing roughly 34% of the total supply. Supporters argue that Ethereum gains less additional security from every new unit of ETH deposited into staking, while non-stakers continue to experience dilution from newly issued ETH.
Critics question whether issuance is actually creating a serious economic problem, arguing that Ethereum's current inflation remains relatively low and that market incentives can naturally influence how much ETH holders choose to stake. Bitwise's Steve Berryman believes that market forces may already be limiting additional staking, as investors prefer to keep part of their ETH liquid rather than lock it into validators.
