Ethereum Staking Rewards Proposal Sparks Debate Over 54% Cut
A proposal within the Ethereum community is sparking debate over a significant reduction in staking rewards. Ethereum Improvement Proposal 8361 (EIP-8361) aims to cut validator yields from 2.6% to 1.2%, representing a 54% decrease, which will be implemented gradually over 18 months.
The proposal seeks to reduce the supply by burning a portion of validator rewards as the total amount of ETH staked increases. However, this move has raised concerns among DeFi (decentralized finance) players, who fear that it could weaken institutional ETH demand and solo staking.
Aave founder Stani Kulechov noted that such a cut could unravel leveraged cycles in liquid staking, making leveraged ETH borrowing unprofitable. Mike Silagadze of Ether.fi argued that the proposal threatens staking-related DeFi and confidence in Ethereum's ability to set its own monetary policy.
