Ethereum Staking Rewards Proposal Sparks Debate Over Validator Incentives
A proposal to reduce staking rewards in Ethereum has been met with opposition from Aave founder Stani Kulechov and Sharplink, a DeFi stakeholder. The proposal, EIP-8363, would burn validator rewards down to nothing as more ETH is staked.
The Tapered Issuance Burn system would destroy a growing share of rewards given to validators, with the burn hitting 100% when staking reaches about 60.25 million ETH, or roughly half of all supply.
Kulechov and Sharplink are concerned that reducing staking rewards would undermine DeFi lending markets, which rely on liquid staking tokens like stETH and eETH worth around $35 billion.
