Ethereum Staking Supply Cap Proposal Sparks Debate Over Concentration and Stability
A proposal to cap Ethereum staking supply at 50% by burning validator rewards has been put forth. The EIP-8363, proposed on August 4, 2026, aims to reduce emissions to 0% once 50% of all ETH has been staked.
The current situation sees the amount of staked ETH increasing and will continue to increase with a minimum issuance rate of 1.5% annualized yield. EIP-8363 would change this by implementing a progressive issuance burn, reaching 100% burn (0% issuance) when the staked supply reaches 50%. This change would be implemented gradually over an 18-month transition period.
The proposal's goal is to enhance trustworthiness, neutrality, and resistance to capture. However, some argue that it will not solve oligopolistic concentration, and may trigger a chain reaction of DeFi lending and deleveraging.
