Ethereum Staking Yields Plummet Below 3 Percent Amid Yield Compression
Ethereum's native staking annual percentage return (APR) has slipped below 3 percent, according to recent data. As of 2026, active validators are earning a base APR of 2.78%, significantly lower than the 5% yields seen in 2022 and 2023.
The compression is attributed to more ETH entering the network, which spreads the fixed issuance across a larger validator set. This phenomenon was considered predictable by experts.
Yield differentiates depending on the staking venue. Solo stakers can capture the base APR plus MEV rewards, adding 0.5% to 1% to total returns. Liquid staking through providers like Lido or Rocket Pool delivers roughly 3.0% to 3.5% net yield after protocol fees. Centralized exchanges like Coinbase and Binance offer the lowest returns, typically between 2.5% and 3.0% after their fees.
The current exit queue remains a significant factor for those planning to leave their positions, as the network limits how much ETH moves through the system per epoch to maintain stability. The queue length fluctuates, but it has reached a historical peak of 2.65 million ETH in September 2025 and currently sits at zero.
