Ethereum Steals Spotlight from Bitcoin as Liquidity Divergence Grows

Bitcoin's (BTC) strong rally in August has raised concerns that investors are playing it safe rather than taking on risk. Despite Bitcoin closing the month over 25% higher compared to July, its stablecoin market cap only grew by 0.5%, failing to break above $310 billion.

This slow inflow of liquidity is evident on the on-chain level as well. While Bitcoin rose by around 45% from its recent low, spot demand remains muted, with a 90-day CVD being neutral. Liquidity across exchanges is also weak, with Binance's stablecoin reserves dropping nearly $7 billion from their cycle peak above $50 billion.

However, the real story may be the growing liquidity divergence between Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH). With capital rotating towards ETH and away from BTC, this could set up conditions for altcoins to outperform Bitcoin in Q4. This trend could provide the first confirmation that Bitcoin's current rally is a bull trap.

Ethereum's increased demand for liquidity comes from both speculative and on-chain utility. The platform hosts 69.4% of all stablecoin supply, surpassing other blockchains combined by more than double. Moreover, staking ETH has reached an all-time high, with $105.96 billion deposited across all validators, representing 35.21% of ETH's supply.

The ETH/BTC ratio is trending higher due to Ethereum's increased liquidity and capital inflows. If this trend persists, the ratio could break above 0.031, potentially spilling over into the broader altcoin market.
