Ethereum Surge Masks Risk of Liquidation Cascade on Aave
Ethereum's recent 18% surge on August 20, 2026, was its biggest single-day gain in two years and triggered over $1 billion in short liquidations. However, a concentrated leveraged staking position on Aave remains vulnerable to a potential liquidation cascade.
The correlation trade involves liquid staking tokens like weETH and WETH debt, which accounts for 9% of Aave positions that hold half the protocol's debt with thin safety margins. This means an 8-9% drop in staking token prices could trigger a rapid liquidation cascade.
While the rally temporarily improved safety, it may have encouraged more leverage, leaving the system exposed if prices reverse sharply.
