Ethereum Surges 25% on Record Short Squeeze and Institutional Demand
Ethereum's price has surged by approximately 25% since Wednesday, boosted by sustained institutional inflows and a record $3 billion short liquidation event. This phenomenon is often referred to as a 'short squeeze,' where traders with bearish positions are forced to buy back assets to cover their losses, accelerating the asset's upward momentum.
The Ethereum market saw nearly $1.2 billion in closed short positions, which added upward pressure to ETH's price as bearish traders rushed to exit their trades. Institutional demand is also contributing to Ethereum's momentum, with net inflows to US spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds reaching a record high of $219.50 million on Thursday.
The cryptocurrency market's rally has been fueled by the recent surge in major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin's 21% gain and its breakthrough above the $75,000 threshold. Open interest in Ethereum futures rose by 5% to $31.67 billion on Friday, showing that traders are re-engaging with the market.
