Ethereum Surges Past All-Time High on Powell's Interest Rate Hint
Ethereum has broken through to new all-time highs on Coinbase, surpassing its previous peak set in November 2021. The cryptocurrency touched a range of $4,866 to $4,885 on August 22, driven by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's hint at a potential interest rate cut in September.
Powell's comments sparked a massive reaction in the crypto market, with Ethereum surging nearly 15% within 24 hours. Bitcoin, in comparison, gained around 4%. The initial breakout was followed by continued climbing, with some data providers reporting the absolute high reaching $4,946 to $4,953.
The current rally has a different foundation than the one in 2021, which was fueled by near-zero interest rates and stimulus checks. Ethereum has undergone significant changes since then, including its transition to proof-of-stake, which reduced ETH issuance and energy consumption. Institutional interest has also evolved, with growing inflows into ETH-based ETFs and Treasury accumulations by corporations.
The future of the market remains uncertain, with traders facing both opportunity and risk due to the high volatility. The gap between Ethereum's performance and Bitcoin's more modest gain raises questions about whether Ethereum can sustain this outperformance or if the premium will compress. Institutional inflows into ETH-based ETFs will be a key metric to watch in the coming weeks.
