Ethereum Tackles Scalability with Bitcoin-Inspired UTXO Integration
Ethereum is taking a significant step towards improving its scalability by integrating Bitcoin-inspired UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) structures into its existing account model.
This hybrid approach aims to tackle blockchain scaling challenges and has shown promising results in reducing Ethereum's permanent payment-state storage. According to estimates, the new system could shrink Ethereum's storage needs from over 100 GB to around 300 MB at scale, significantly easing node operation costs.
The strategy is part of a broader roadmap targeting 1,000x scaling through execution improvements, data availability, and state management. To achieve this, innovations like recursive STARKs and Utreexo's compact proofs are being leveraged to maintain decentralization and efficiency as network activity grows.
