Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, has highlighted the significance of the Ethereum network in advancing AI agents. In an interview with OKX, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Buterin emphasized that Ethereum is becoming a foundational economic layer for the future of AI.

The Ethereum blockchain enables trustless autonomy and permissionless settlements, which are crucial for decentralized AI systems to interact and transact with each other across organizational boundaries. Without a trustless blockchain, multi-agent AI systems would rely heavily on centralized corporate platforms to coordinate activities.

Buterin explained that cooperation between AI agents requires an economic layer to facilitate interactions based on economic rules, rewards, or penalties. He noted that AI agents need a reliable source to establish trust in order to interact with each other effectively.
