Ethereum Turns 11: A Decade of Growth and Challenges Ahead
The Ethereum blockchain has reached its 11th year since its inception in 2015. On that day, the Genesis Block was created, marking the beginning of a new era in decentralized finance.
In 2013, Vitalik Buterin first described the concept of Ethereum, and in 2014, the project raised nearly $18 million through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), which is considered one of the first instances of distributing coins via this method. The ICO set a price of 2,000 ETH per 1 BTC, which would decrease linearly to 1,337 ETH per 1 BTC after 14 days.
The price of Ether has grown exponentially since its inception, reaching $1,920 by July 30, 2026. Relative to Bitcoin, the price of Ether is now 0.0297, representing a nearly 60-fold increase from its ICO price. Interestingly, not all ICO participants have sold their Ethereum coins, and those who invested small amounts at the time are now dollar millionaires.
The future of Ethereum looks uncertain, with a period of stagnation in protocol governance since its transition to staking mechanisms in 2022. However, the ETH developer community has become active in various areas of development, including building artificial intelligence infrastructure and network privacy mechanisms. The project's co-founders are also focusing on scalability and protecting the blockchain from quantum computers.
