Ethereum Turns 11 with Record Stablecoin Base but Cooling Mainnet Fees
Ethereum celebrated its 11th birthday on July 30, marking a significant milestone in its journey. The network has come a long way since its launch as Frontier in 2015, surviving numerous challenges and disruptions.
Despite the many ups and downs, Ethereum remains one of the most important settlement layers in crypto, hosting approximately $148.8 billion in stablecoins and around $15.5 billion in tokenized real-world assets. However, daily mainnet revenue has cooled significantly, dropping to near $330,000 with base-chain fees hovering around $734,000 over a 24-hour period.
While this might seem like a cause for concern, it's essential to consider the trade-off between scaling and base-layer fee capture. Ethereum wanted scaling, which reduces fees, but lower fees also mean direct mainnet revenue declines.
