Ethereum Unveils Ambitious Roadmap for 2030 with Five North Star Goals
Ethereum has entered its eleventh year since its launch in 2015. In 2025, researcher Justin Drake proposed the 'Lean Ethereum' vision, which aims to eliminate redundant design and consolidate various research directions into a unified development blueprint.
The 'Strawmap,' a draft document outlining the hard forks from the Glamsterdam upgrade in the second half of 2026 through 2029, clarifies that all upgrades point to five major development goals, referred to as the North Star Goals. The first goal is to accelerate the Ethereum L1 network's speed by implementing Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK proofs) and reducing the block time from 12 seconds to 4 seconds.
The second goal is to increase throughput capacity, aiming for 1 billion Gas per second (Giga Gas), approximately 200 times higher than the current rate. ZK proofs will enable nodes to verify blocks without re-executing transactions, allowing for faster verification and increased throughput.
