Ethereum Upgrade to Allow Gas Fees Paid Without ETH in 2027
Ethereum's upcoming Hegotá upgrade is set to include Frame Transactions (EIP-8141), which would enable users to pay gas fees without holding ETH in their wallets. This proposal has been moved into the planned scope of Ethereum's 2027 upgrade and has received an S-tier rating from the Ethereum Foundation.
The current system requires transaction fees to be paid in ETH, forcing users who hold stablecoins like USDC or USDT to acquire ETH before making transactions. Frame Transactions would separate authorization, fee payment, and execution into different parts of a single transaction, allowing wallets or applications to pay ETH fees on behalf of the user.
This change would also enable atomic multi-action transactions and programmable authorization rules, reducing reliance on separate gas-abstraction infrastructure. However, the proposal remains a draft and is still pending DoS risk assessments, wallet support, and security reviews before mainnet deployment.
