Ethereum Validator Economics Shift with 0x02 Credential Introduction
The Ethereum network has seen a significant shift in validator economics following the Pectra consolidation. The upgrade introduced a new validator type, 0x02, which allows for auto-compounding of rewards and enables the consolidation of multiple validators into a single key.
This change has led to a reduction in the total node count by 9% in September, lessening the load on the peer-to-peer network and the number of BLS signatures that nodes aggregate each epoch. The growing adoption of consolidation is reflected in this reduction.
Large operators are using consolidation to merge multiple indices into one, with an EIP-7685 request processed by the system at a rate of one per block, limiting the number of requests to 7,200 per day.
The 0x02 credential type is distinct from the 0x01 type and does not support automatic skimming. Rewards accrue into the balance until the 2,048 ETH cap is reached, requiring users to trigger manual withdrawals for rewards.
