Ethereum Validators Take Control: Based Rollups Revolutionize Layer-2 Sequencing
Ethereum's layer-2 ecosystem has a technical contradiction that's often overlooked. Rollups, touted as scalability solutions, inherit the security of the base layer but operate with a centralized sequencer that introduces a single point of trust.
This centralized sequencer decides transaction order, can censor addresses, and captures extractable value generated on the network. Users accept this architecture in exchange for fast confirmations and low fees, assuming their assets remain protected by forced-exit mechanisms to L1.
The based rollup proposal removes this trade-off by shifting the sequencing function directly to Ethereum validators. This means that instead of relying on a centralized sequencer, transaction ordering is determined by the L1 proposer assigned to each slot.
