Ethereum's $1B Buying Frenzy: A Spot-Led Market or a Warning Sign?

Ethereum's price action has been gaining momentum in recent times, with significant buying activity taking place across various fronts. Over the past eight trading days, BlackRock's ETHA ETF saw $889.8 million in net purchases, while another address received a substantial 40,000 ETH worth $100.09 million from Binance.

This is not just retail buying; institutional investors are also stepping up their game. A whale wallet recently spent $13.55 million to purchase 5,425 ETH at around $2,498, and with the current state of affairs, it's looking increasingly possible that Ethereum may be poised for a straight move up.

The Ethereum reserves across exchanges have been falling throughout the year, dropping to 14.93 million ETH in recent times. This decline in available supply could make the market more sensitive as demand improves. The Coinbase Premium Index (CPI) has turned positive again, indicating that there's more trading on Coinbase for Ethereum than on other exchanges.

What's particularly interesting is open interest (OI), which stands at around $14.5 billion, well below earlier 2026 highs. This suggests that the current buying activity is spot-led rather than leverage-focused, and as long as OI doesn't rise faster than price, things should remain healthy.
