Ethereum's Cheap Success Sparks Consolidation Fears
Ethereum's recent success has come at a cost - literally.
Average gas prices have plummeted to around 0.5 gwei in early 2026, with some periods dipping as low as 0.15 gwei, making the cost of transacting on the world's largest smart-contract platform negligible.
This has led to a decrease in Ethereum's transaction fees, which have fallen behind those of Tron and Solana over the past 30 days, with Ethereum pulling in roughly $10.3 million in transaction fees during that time.
The Dencun upgrade, rolled out in 2024, and the upcoming Fusaka upgrade are designed to reduce costs further, but some analysts have raised concerns about the potential for a 'value-leak' problem, where Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base process millions of transactions at negligible cost.
