Ethereum's EIP-8141 Brings Smart Contract Powers to Every Wallet
Ethereum is pushing to make smart-contract powers part of its base protocol through EIP-8141, a proposal that's now gaining attention as Hegota takes shape for 2027.
EIP-8141 introduces the Frame Transaction, which lets an account define how its own transaction gets checked and paid for before execution. This means ordinary Ethereum wallets could start looking more like smart accounts, with capabilities such as multisig approvals, sponsored gas, batched calls, key rotation, and non-standard signatures.
The proposal, authored by Vitalik Buterin among others, aims to simplify the wallet experience by supporting native transaction structures. However, implementing this change will require careful consideration of the public mempool's hostile nature and the potential for denial-of-service attacks.
Hegota is now the real deadline for Ethereum protocol changes, with FOCIL (formerly EIP-7805) also scheduled for implementation. The latter proposal lets a committee of validators put transactions on inclusion lists that block builders are expected to honor, aiming to preserve Ethereum's censorship resistance.
