Ethereum's Hegotá Upgrade Inclues Frame Transactions for Feeless Gas Payments
Ethereum's upcoming Hegotá upgrade is gaining momentum with the inclusion of Frame Transactions (EIP-8141), a proposal that would allow users to pay gas fees without holding ETH in their wallets. This change would separate transaction authorization, fee payment, and execution into different parts of a single transaction.
According to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who is one of the 10 authors of the proposal, important progress on Frames has been quietly happening over the last few months. The proposal addresses a common problem for users who hold stablecoins such as USDC or USDT but lack enough ETH to pay network fees.
With Frame Transactions, wallets or applications could pay the required ETH fee on behalf of the user, with the user settling the cost in an ERC-20 token such as a stablecoin. This would simplify Ethereum's user experience and reduce the need for separate relayers and other infrastructure currently used to abstract gas payments.
The proposal has been given top priority by the Ethereum Foundation's Protocol cluster and is considered essential to the fork, with several related proposals receiving A-tier ratings. However, Frame Transactions remain a draft and are not yet available on the Ethereum mainnet, pending technical issues, wallet support, client implementations, testnet deployments, and security reviews.
