Ethereum's Leveraged Derivatives Market: Is Long-Term Conviction Enough?
Ethereum's derivatives markets have seen a significant increase in leverage as traders rely more on borrowed exposure compared to spot capital. The Estimated Leverage Ratio (ELR) at Binance has reached a record high of 0.65, up sharply from the 2022 bear market range of 0.20-0.30.
This reflects an expansion in Open Interest (OI), even as Binance's ETH reserves continue to shrink. Funding Rates remain close to neutral, indicating that leverage is building but there is no clear bullish or bearish bias. As a result, small price movements can trigger liquidation cascades larger than normal.
Institutional staking, on the other hand, reinforces long-term conviction. Purpose Investments recently staked 42,000 ETH worth roughly $80 million into the Beacon Deposit Contract over three hours, representing 36.6% of the firm's 114,900 ETH holdings. This reduces liquid supply while strengthening network security.
The Ethereum Foundation also demonstrates long-term commitment, transferring 578.38 ETH worth about $1.08 million to a new Gnosis Safe Proxy wallet after depositing just 2.675 ETH worth about $5,000 to Kraken. Most of the funds remained within self-custody rather than moving toward exchange liquidity.
