Ethereum's Pioneering Token Sale Raises $18.3 Million in 42 Days
In July 2014, Ethereum's developers were in a bind. The project had to be funded before it could even launch, but it didn't have any existing revenue streams. The solution was an innovative token sale that raised $18.3 million in just 42 days.
The sale, which began on July 22 and ended on September 2, allowed investors to buy Ethereum tokens (ETH) using Bitcoin (BTC). Initially, the exchange rate was 2,000 ETH for 1 BTC, but it gradually increased as the sale progressed, peaking at 1,337 ETH for 1 BTC. This was a nod to computer slang, 'leet,' and a testament to the team's creativity.
The success of this token sale was unprecedented. It raised more than $18 million and was the third-largest crowdfunding effort at the time, surpassing campaigns in other sectors. The funds were used to develop the Ethereum network, which was launched under the code name Frontier in 2015.
Today, those who participated in the early token sale hold a significant portion of the circulating ETH supply. They made one of the best investments of the decade, with some earning tens of thousands of dollars for their initial $1,000 investment. However, not everyone was as fortunate; Vitalik Buterin himself sold 500,000 ETH at $0.99 each in 2016, a decision that would make any investor cringe.
