Ethereum's Quantum Future Takes Shape: Vitalik Buterin Details New Roadmap Priorities
Ethereum's long-term roadmap has undergone significant changes since its original plan set out in 2023. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, explained that while some core goals remain the same, the order of certain topics and technologies have changed or been replaced with better alternatives.
One major shift is the increased focus on security against quantum computers, which has taken priority over other areas such as VDFs (Verifiable Delay Functions) and EVM improvements. In addition, Verkle trees have been replaced by a 'unified BT' approach, then further simplified to a 'PBT' structure.
The inclusion of strong user privacy is another significant change in the new roadmap. Buterin noted that developers are working on various mechanisms, including keyed nonce and recent roots, lean privacy pools, FOCIL components, and structures called 'wormholes', indicating a direct prioritization of privacy at the protocol level.
The Ethereum team also aims to increase the use of formal verification by simplifying its protocol specification. Buterin stated that modern AI tools have made it feasible to formally verify the entire protocol, which could play a fundamental role in Ethereum's technical future.
