Ethereum's Stake Targeting Proposal Sparks Controversy in DeFi Community
Ethereum's proposed stake targeting EIP has sparked controversy in the crypto community. In early August 2026, six Ethereum Foundation researchers and developers published a proposal to taper issuance as staked supply approaches 50%, driving staking yields toward zero.
The goal is to reduce overpayment for security by capping staking at around 30-40% of total ETH supply. However, the proposal has been met with widespread criticism from builders and researchers in the DeFi ecosystem.
Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave, argued that the proposal would push solo stakers out of the network, concentrate stake in exchanges, collapse the DeFi yield layer, and convert ETH into a zero-yield 'funding leg' with structural sell pressure. He believes the proposal is an attempt to lift the ETH price out of a prolonged bear market.
Mike Silagadze, founder of Ether.fi, added that solo stakers would be disproportionately affected by the proposed changes, as they would no longer break even at yields below 2-2.5%. He warned that exchanges and staking custodians would stake at any yield, while independent operators exit the network.
