Ethereum's Upgrade Cycle Faces First Major Test with Glamsterdam
Ethereum's upgrade cycle is facing its first major test as developers struggle to stabilize the network ahead of the planned October 6 Sepolia testnet launch.
The issues have raised concerns about the potential delay of the mainnet launch, which was previously targeted for December. However, the Ethereum Foundation engineer Stefan Starflinger said that creating a block with the same hash as its parent could cause the entire network to stop, and another problem related to EIP-8037 would increase the gas cost of creating new blockchain data.
The next major test, Glam-Devnet-11, will help determine whether Ethereum can keep the October 6 Sepolia target and still aim for a December mainnet launch. Kim said that devnets are designed to find and fix bugs, but the faster pace of upgrades is making it harder to predict the timeline.
