EU AML Regulation to Impact Zcash Exchanges in July 2027
The European Union's regulation on anti-money laundering (AML) is set to impact crypto exchanges in July 2027, but it doesn't directly affect individuals' ownership of Zcash. According to Regulation (EU) 2024/1624, also known as the AMLR, credit institutions, financial institutions, and crypto-asset service providers will be prohibited from keeping accounts that allow for anonymous or heavily obscured transactions.
The regulation specifically targets exchanges, brokers, and custodians, not private individuals. This means that while European trading venues may delist Zcash due to the new rules, individual ownership of the coin remains unaffected.
Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 defines anonymity-enhancing coins as those with built-in features designed to make crypto-asset transfer information anonymous, either systematically or optionally. Zcash's two address types, transparent and shielded addresses, fall under this definition due to the optional use of shielded addresses.
The price of ZEC has recently surged, reaching an eight-year high in August 2026, with a market capitalization of around $12.9 billion and trading volume of over $1.2 billion. Grayscale's fifth S-3/A for a Zcash spot ETF was filed on August 21, 2026, which would turn the existing fund into the first US spot ETF on Zcash if approved.
