EU Bans Belarusians from Regulated Crypto Firms Amid Sanctions Expansion
The European Union has expanded its sanctions against Belarus to include crypto-asset service providers regulated under the MiCA framework. From August 25, Belarusian nationals and residents will be barred from owning, controlling or managing these firms.
This move extends earlier restrictions on crypto wallets and custody services to cover all categories of crypto asset services recognized under MiCA. The regulation defines these services as operating crypto trading platforms, exchanging crypto assets, executing and transmitting client orders, placing crypto assets, providing transfer services, offering investment advice, and managing crypto portfolios.
The decision comes amid Belarus's efforts to promote cryptocurrency use within the country while facing years of financial sanctions from Western governments. President Alexander Lukashenko has urged the banking sector to expand the use of cryptocurrencies, arguing that traditional financial methods are no longer sufficient for an economy operating under international sanctions.
