EU Carbon Costs Spur Bitcoin Mining Exodus to Tax-Haven Russia
Rising carbon costs in the European Union have led to a shift in Bitcoin mining operations from Europe to Russia, where there is no carbon tax. According to a study by Vietnamese researchers, companies are switching off their machines in Europe and activating ones in Russia based on cost efficiency.
The study found that higher carbon prices in the EU are causing this migration trend. In contrast, Russia is developing a regulated crypto financial market with futures contracts set to launch in September 2026, coinciding with new digital currency laws.
However, some Russian regions have started banning mining, which could limit this migration trend. This development highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing economic interests and environmental concerns in the cryptocurrency industry.
