EU MiCA Regulation Falls Short with Only Three Compliant Stablecoins Among Top 50
The European Union's MiCA regulation has created a functional market for stablecoins in Europe, but its reach is limited to only three of the top 50 stablecoins globally. According to Patrick Hansen, Circle's Senior Director of EU Strategy and Policy, these three compliant tokens - $USDC, $USDG, and $EURC - are all linked to Circle.
The current MiCA framework has issued approximately 35 regulated e-money tokens to 21 entities in the EU. However, only a handful of these tokens appear near the top of global stablecoin rankings, indicating that MiCA compliance may be a barrier for global-scale issuers.
Hansen flagged the compliance gap and outlined three priorities for the upcoming MiCA framework review: improving market competitiveness, strengthening global regulatory coordination, and establishing a recognition regime for foreign-regulated stablecoins. This could potentially expand the pool of compliant stablecoins available to EU users without requiring every global issuer to establish a European entity.
