EU Sanctions Expand to Crypto Service Providers for Belarus
The European Union is expanding its sanctions against Belarus to include crypto service providers. Starting August 25, Belarusian nationals and residents will be prohibited from owning or controlling EU-based entities that provide various crypto services under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.
This measure was introduced as part of the Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1847, which amended the EU's sanctions framework targeting Belarus over its involvement in Russia's war against Ukraine. The decision enters into force on July 24, while the expanded crypto provision will apply from August 25.
The restriction applies to any entity providing 'any other crypto-asset services' as defined under MiCA, including operating trading platforms, exchanging crypto assets, and offering investment advice or portfolio management. This expansion follows a broader EU push to target crypto platforms accused of helping Russia evade sanctions imposed over its war in Ukraine.
